MOVE LIKE YOU GIVE A DUCK

"Move Like You Give a Duck" is a community-driven initiative dedicated to promoting safe and responsible travel for all who share the roads in Southwest DC. Through engaging outreach and educational programs, this campaign aligns with DC's Vision Zero goals, striving to eliminate traffic-related injuries and fatalities. By fostering awareness and encouraging mindful behaviors among drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users, "Move Like You Give a Duck" aims to create safer, more compassionate streets for everyone.

DC Seatbelt Alert!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says buckling up cuts the risk of fatal injuries by 45% and slashes moderate to severe injuries by 50%.

Be part of the solution and buckle up - every trip, every time!

Click It. Don’t Risk It.

Did you know that over 93% of drivers and passengers in DC buckle up? Join the club, and buckle up! It’s a simple move that saves lives.

In 2022, more than 40% of car occupants who lost their lives in crashes across the US weren’t wearing seatbelts. Don’t take the risk—strap in and stay safe! Seatbelts Save Lives!

Leaving someone—whether a child, elderly adult, or pet—unattended in a car, even for just a few minutes, can have devastating consequences. On a warm day, a car’s interior can heat up by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, putting lives at risk of heatstroke or worse. And no, cracking the window won’t help!

But heat isn’t the only danger: Unattended passengers also face risks like car theft, unintentional vehicle movement, or medical emergencies.

We’re on a mission to prevent these tragedies. You can help, too! Always look before you lock, and speak up if you see an unattended passenger.

Together, we can save lives.

Don’t Risk It: Never Leave Them Behind!

Hot Cars = Big Danger!

Did you know that on a mild 60°F day, the inside of a car can rocket past 110°F in minutes? That’s hotter than a desert—and just as dangerous!

Over the past 25 years, more than 1,000 children have lost their lives to heatstroke after being left in cars.

Don’t let a simple mistake turn tragic. Look Before You Lock!

Protect Those on the Move: Safe Streets Start With You!

Vulnerable road users—like pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users, and scooter riders—are at the greatest risk on our streets. Without the protection of a vehicle, they’re more likely to face serious injury or worse in a crash. Kids, older adults, and people with disabilities are especially at risk.

Here’s a critical fact: Speed kills. A pedestrian struck by a car traveling at 30 mph has less than a 60% chance of survival—but when the speed is reduced to 20 mph, that chance jumps to around 95%*. Slowing down truly saves lives.

We can work together to change behaviors and create safe streets for everyone. Protecting people on two feet and two wheels means slowing down, staying alert, and respecting their right to the road.

Remember: Safe streets are shared streets. Your choices behind the wheel can make all the difference. Let’s all do our part to ensure everyone arrives safely.

Drive Like You Give a Duck. Slow Down. Stay Alert. Save Lives.
